Depending on who's asking, I'm a games person interested in engagement, or an engagement person interested in games!
Video games are my first love, I'm interested in all the things games do that fall outside of entertainment.
My interests include parliamentary engagement, specifically thinking about innovative ways to engage people (particularly seldom-heard groups) with parliaments and politics more broadly. My work focusses less on how people are disengaged and more on places and ways in which engagement is happening that we might not have thought about.
I'm also interested in digital research methods, particularly digital ethnography in online games. I'm currently thinking a lot about avatars and how we make physical and non-physical character choices when undertaking digital ethnographic work.
I teach on several modules at the University of Leeds including The Politics of Global Challenges, British Politics and Approaches to Analysis and was recently awarded Associate Fellowship from Advance HE.
When I'm not doing the above, I'm playing pickleball, travelling the world, cooking new dishes and walking!
I'm deeply interested in the reasons people engage and don't engage in politics. Particularly, of late, the emotional cost not engaging creates. I love hearing about all the ways people and parliaments do political engagement, particularly unique approaches to engaging seldom-heard groups.
I'm spending a lot of time lately thinking about how people understand their online communities, how online games act as community spaces rather than goal-oriented ones and whether thinking about them as online third places is still quite right. I have just finished a long ethnography in GTA V roleplay and am missing it already.
